Our Committee

As a registered charity, Walkington Pre-School is run by an elected committee of unpaid volunteers, the majority of whom are parents of children currently attending the Pre-School.  We meet once a month (usually a Wednesday evening at the moment) to discuss current issues at the Pre-School and to help in the planning of events and fundraising activities.  We do not discuss individual children and everything discussed remains confidential.  All decisions are made as a group.

Fundamentally, the role of the committee is to:
  • ensure that the Pre-School is a safe place for both children and staff
  • monitor the waiting list
  • monitor any accidents and incidents
  • be responsible for the finances of the Pre-School

There can be up to twelve committee members and there must be a Chair, a Treasurer and a Secretary.

The Chair has a number of key functions.  This person:
  • is responsible for organising the agenda for meetings and explaining agenda items during meetings
  • gives every committee member the opportunity to express their views fully, clarifying points to ensure everyone fully understands what is being discussed and why
  • ensures that confidentiality is maintained in all discussions
  • takes action to follow up any grievances
  • liaises with staff
  • liaises with the Playing Field Association (our landlord)

The Treasurer is responsible for:
  • day to day book-keeping
  • ensuring staff are paid correctly
  • paying accounts
  • arranging yearly audit for the AGM
  • preparing a monthly report for meetings
  • filing and keeping financial records

The role of Secretary involves:
  • taking the minutes at meetings
  • circulating these promptly
  • circulating the agenda

A new committee is elected at our AGM each October and we always welcome new members. For further information feel free to ask a member of staff or committee.

“I have been a member of the committee for a year and I have thoroughly enjoyed it.  Meetings are always lively and interesting and it’s great to feel able to contribute to discussions about what is happening at Pre-School.  I’ve also really enjoyed working as part of a team to organise events like the Easter Fun Day.  Every member of the committee brings different skills and experience and together we make a really strong team.”
